Alexandria Swim Club member Bridget Opdahl captured fourth place in the 50 freestyle during the 2012 Long Course Senior Zone meet in Lawrence, Kansas.
“Bridget spent her summer doing what a lot of athletes do – training and spending time with friends around the pool,” said head coach David Molesworth. “She spent hours and hours in and out of the pool training for her main events – the 50 free and 100 free.
“After over 100 hours with the Alexandria Swim Club for the summer, she achieved a goal only eight people can claim for the 2012 Long Course Senior Zone swim meet and that was to stand on the podium in the 50 freestyle.”
Opdahl’s 50 free time was 28.38, just 1.41 seconds behind the first place time belonging to Makenna Scheitlin of Illinois.
Opdahl also finished 15th in the 100 free with a time of 1:03.
In all, 13 states or areas were represented – Arkansas, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, the Missouri Valley, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Wisconsin and the Ozark region.
“It has been fun to watch Bridget continue to improve with her swimming and I was very excited to see all of that hard work really pay off with a top five finish in a tough event,” said Molesworth. “I am looking forward to watching her continue to improve and reach some even bigger goals.”
Opdahl has been a three-time state long course qualifier over the past three years, and has qualified for the Senior Zone meet the last two years.
She will be a senior at Minnewaska Area High School and has qualified for the state high school swim meet in her previous two seasons with the Minnewaska/Morris Gators.
