Chas Betts, the grandson of Osakis’ Nona Betts, saw his goal of coming home with an Olympic medal from the London games come up short last Monday.
The 26-year-old from St. Michael-Albertville competed for Team USA in Greco-Roman wrestling. He dominated his first match in the games, winning 6-0, 1-0 over Micronesia’s Keitani Graham at 84kg/185 lbs. He later fell to Cuba’s Pablo Shorey Hernandez in a 1-0, 1-0 match in the Round of 16.
Betts then had to wait and watch as Shorey Hernandez lost in the quarterfinals. Had Hernandez made the finals, Betts would have had an opportunity to wrestle again with a shot at the bronze medal.
Betts was wrestling in his first Olympics after qualifying by winning his 84kg weight class at the U.S. Team Trials on April 21.
