The final matches took place today, Saturday, capping off a week-long tournament of qualifying and match play at the Alexandria Golf Course.
When the dust settled on the tournament’s seven divisions, an Alexandrian was standing at the very top of four of them.
Last year's big winner, Ben Vangsness of Alexandria, successfully defended his title in the Men’s Championship Division, knocking off three-time Resorters champion Jerry Rose of Sarasota, Florida in Saturday’s final, 2-1.
It was the first time the division has had a repeat champion in nine years.
Other Alexandria golfers who rose to the top included:
--Maggie Leland, who rolled to a 7-6 win over her Augustana College teammate, Emily Kvidera to win the Women’s Division.
--Steve Herzog, a 6-5 winner over Jim Arnold of Plymouth in the Senior Men’s Championship.
--Tom Eidsvold, who defeated Dick Lasch in 21 holes to win the Men’s Masters Championship (his first title after playing in the tournament for 57 years).
Champions in the remaining divisions included:
--Men’s Executive Division winner Daryl Schomer of St. Cloud. He defeated Kevin Farley of Lakeville in the final, 1-up.
--Junior 13-15 Division winner Peter Dierks of Leawood, Kansas (also the division’s medalist). He rolled to a 7-5 victory over Carter Kranz of Sauk Centre in the final.
--Junior 10-12 Division winner Nathanial Adams. He defeated Elliot Amundson of Alexandria, 5-4 in the final.
