Resorters Golf Tournament: Two veterans tangle in Senior Men's
vs. Arnold for
all the marbles
Steve Herzog of Alexandria and Jim Arnold of Plymouth will duke it out for the Senior Men’s Division title today.
They both rolled to victories yesterday that put them in the clubhouse earlier than the day before. Herzog’s match was complete after 16 holes, four fewer than he played on Thursday and Arnold needed just 14 holes for his win, compared to 17 in the quarterfinals.
They’re both used to the pressure that comes with tournament match play at this level. Arnold, a long-time Resorters competitor, advanced to the second round in the division last year and Herzog was the 1992 champion in the Resorters Executive Division.
Neither of them has ever won the Senior division, however.
They’ll begin their battle from the No. 1 tee at approximately 12:20 p.m. Meanwhile, here’s a look back at yesterday’s action:
Greg Mattson of Becker started out A-OK against Herzog, winning Nos. 2 and 3 with solid pars and then matched Herzog’s pars on the next two holes.
Then the momentum shifted. Herzog won No. 6 with birdie and closed out the front with two big wins, a birdie on No. 8 and a par on No. 9, to steal the lead.
Herzog went 2-up after making par on No. 11. He then matched Mattson stroke-for-stroke on the next four holes.
The match ended on No. 16 when Herzog parred the hole to nail down a 3-2 victory.
Bob Falls of Edina and Arnold both struggled a bit yesterday.
Falls began with two double-bogeys. Arnold could only match the first one and then took the early lead with a par on No. 2.
Falls’ pars on the next two holes were good enough to place him in the lead. Arnold then put together his own streak, winning three of the next four holes – a par on No. 5, a birdie on No. 6 and a par on No. 8 to take a 2-up lead, which he held at the turn.
Arnold poured it on after they crossed the road, winning No. 10 and 11 with par to go 4-up. Falls momentarily stopped the onslaught with a par win on No. 12 but Arnold wasn’t about to let this one slip away. He won the next two holes with pars to notch a 5-4 victory.
Steve Herzog def. Greg Mattson, 3-2
Jim Arnold def. Bob Falls, 5-4
