Three former champions advanced to today’s semifinal in the Women’s Division

It’s down to three former champs in the Women’s Division.

A head-to-head battle between Ramsey’s Emily Kvidera, the defending champion, and Betsy Aldrich of St. Louis Park, the 2003 and 2008 titlist resulted in Kvidera advancing with a 6-4 victory Thursday.

She will now face Mariah Chesley of Mankato, who defeated Amanda Woodhull 3-2.

In the lower bracket, Alexandria’s Maggie Leland, the 2007 and 2009 champion, defeated Andrea Dwyer of Elk River 6-4. She will face 2010 champion Sarah Roering of Glenwood, who was a 1-up winner over Brenna Lervick of Chanhassen.

The foursome will take their place at the No. 1 tee today at 12:48 to begin the semifinals.

Kvidera tops Aldrich, 6-4

Defending champ Emily Kvidera, in just her second year of competition in the Resorters, had to face a seasoned veteran in yesterday’s quarter final match.

Betsy Aldrich holds a pair of titles in the Women’s Division as well as being a seven-time medalist – not something to take lightly.

Kvidera might be young, but her resumé is pretty well stocked, having tied for ninth individually at the NCAA championships this past spring and has played in that event during all three years as a Viking golfer at Augustana College.

She let her clubs do the talking Thursday as she came away with a 6-4 win over Aldrich.

Both golfers started smoothly; neither one making a move for the first three holes.

Kvidera struck first with a par on No. 4, then parred the next hole for a 2-up lead.

A halved hole preceeded Aldrich’s par on No. 7 that cut the lead in half, but Kvidera had more up her sleeve.

She parred No. 8 to go back up by two and both golfers played evenly on the final hole of the front nine.

It was on the back nine that Kvidera made her move, not giving an inch as she won by par and birdie to go up four, then added another par-birdie combo on Nos. 13 and 14 to close the match and head for today’s semifinals.

Chesley defeats Woodhull, 3-2

19-year-old Mariah Chesley advanced to today’s semifinals with a 3-2 victory over Minnetonka’s Amanda Woodhull.

Chesley opened by quickly taking the first hole on a par, but Woodhull brought things back to even on No. 3 with a bogey win.

The two traded wins on Nos. 5 and 6, but from there, Chesley won the final three holes of the front nine on par for a 3-up lead.

On the back nine, Woodhull made one more stab at her opponent with a win on No. 12 by par.

It was Chesley, however, that had the final say when she earned a bogey win on No. 15. After the two halved 16, Chesley was declared the winner by three with two holes remaining.

Leland upends Dwyer, 6-5

Maggie Leland’s dominant march toward the championship continued yesterday when she handed Andrea Dwyer of Elk River a 6-5 loss.

Dwyer took advantage of a first hole bogey by Leland to go up one, but the Alexandrian evened things up on No. 3, winning by bogey.

From there, it was all hers. She won the following four holes on par, birdie, birdie, birdie for a 4-up lead before the two matched shots on the final two holes.

Leland started the back nine in winning form, grabbing a par win on No. 10, and adding a birdie win on 12 to go up by six.

When the two halved the following hole, it left Leland the winner 6-5.

Roering def. Lervick, 1-up

It may have been the closest match of the four and possibly the most exciting, but we may never know.

Roering led throughout the match with Lervick, but never by more than two. Lervick did manage to even the match on No. 12, but Roering battled back for the 1-up win.
