Resorters Golf Tournament: Medalist still battling in Junior 13-15 Division

Dierks had to eke out a 1-up win over Bigger to advance to Friday's semifinal.

Medalist Peter Dierks kept himself in contention for the Juniors 13-15 Division championship yesterday as he battled Alexandria’s Lukas Bigger to a 1-up victory in 18 holes.

That will put the Leawood, Kansas native up against Andrew Lindberg of Coppell, Texas at noon on Friday.

Lindberg was a 4-3 winner over Ben Sigel of Deephaven in the other upper bracket match, while in the lower bracket, Sam Franklin of Maple Grove upended Cole Haugen of Alexandria 6-5 and Carter Kranz of Sauk Centre stopped Gage Grimes of Alexandria

The 13-15s will have the day off today, but return to play on Friday at noon on the first tee.

Dierks defeats Bigger

It was a battle the entire 18 holes for Dierks and Bigger, and Dierks escaped with a 1-up win in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Even after three holes to start the back nine, Dierks made his move on No. 13 with a par win. He held on to that margin until No. 17, when Bigger parred to put the match back to even, then went 1-up on a birdie at 18.

Dierks evened the playing field as the two took to the front nine, winning by birdie on No. 1, then adding his second straight birdie on No. 2 for a 1-up lead. He increased his lead to two with a par win on the following hole.

Bigger challenged his opponent as he parred No. 4 to cut the lead to one, then evened the match once again on No. 6 with a birdie of his own.

Dierks countered with his third birdie of the match on No. 7 for a 1-up lead and the two finished stroke-for-stroke on the final two holes to leave Dierks with the win.

Lindberg stops Sigel

After allowing Sigel to take a 2-up lead through the first seven holes of the match, Lindberg settled into a rhythm and began to chip away at his opponent.

Cutting the lead to one on No. 17, Lindberg held that advantage as they made the turn to the front nine.

There, he evened the match on No. 2, then used the next four holes to go 4-up and win 4-3.

Franklin tops Haugen

Franklin started his march toward a victory early in his match with Haugen, going up five on the first five holes of play.

He used par, birdie, birdie, bogey and bogey to do it.

Haugen took one back on No. 16 as he parred the hole, then sliced off another hole by parring No. 18 for a win.

But Franklin used par, par and bogey wins on 1, 2 and 4 to stop the match with a 6-5 lead.

Kranz downs Grimes

In a 5-4 win, Kranz got the early lead with par and birdie wins on Nos. 10 and 11 to start his match against Grimes.

Grimes was able to bounce back, taking No. 12 on a par, but Kranz sandwiched a birdie win on No. 15 with par victories on Nos. 13 and 18 to lead by three at the half.

On the front nine, Kranz won the first hole on a par, then made his final move on No. 5 as he won with a bogey to end the match.
