Resorters Golf Tournament: Four tie for medalist in Men's Championship

Field boasts two former champs and three big winners from Junior Division

If the qualifying round is any indication of how the Resorters’ Men’s Championship Division plays out over the next four days, there will be a lot of twists, firsts and hard-nosed golf ahead.

A record-tying four golfers shared medalist honors with a round of 68. They are Chris Sholts of Alexandria, Jerry Rose of Sarasota, Florida, Casey Vangsness of Alexandria, and Dylan Gergen of Mendota Heights.

In 91-year history of the Resorters, there’s been only one other instance of “quad-medalists.” It happened under the two-day qualifying format in 1978 when four golfers tied for the low round of 142.

Most years, only one golfer attains the honor. In fact, the last time there were even co-medalists was in 2003 when Greg Peterson and Tim Duffey both carded 68s.

This year’s four medalists matched the 68 that was carded last year by Mark Giorgi of Red Wing.

The 2012 starting field of 32 hopefuls includes former champions Ben Vangsness of Alexandria, who is back to defend his title from last year, and three-time champ Rose (1979, 1983 and 2000), who is still playing razor sharp at age 54.

The field also includes three former Junior Division champions – 16-year-old Nick Heinen of Edmond, OK, who won it last year and in 2009; 19-year-old Joey Shroyer of Victoria, the 2008 winner; and 16-year-old Matt Bennett of Marshall, a 2010 champ.

Plenty of other familiar names dot the division, including Eric Peterson of Benson, the 1993 runner-up, and 18-year-old Sam Peterson of Benson, who was a semifinalist in last year’s tournament.

This year’s qualifying cutoff was the same as last year: 76. Seven golfers tied that mark with only six spots left. In the tie breaker, Jon Hafdal, Garrett Emond, Alec Heinen, Jordon Kolden, Matt Bennett and Derek Swedberg squeaked through while Brent Grossman will have to wait until next year.

With an intriguing mix of cagey veterans and promising newcomers, the stage is set for some exciting match play.

It all begins today at the No. 1 tee at high noon.
