Judging day for Douglas County 4-H'ers in the Food Review and Demonstrations project areas was held Monday, July 16.
Food Review and Demonstrations are both public presentations where youth develop self-confidence, express their ideas clearly, acquire subject matter knowledge and share that knowledge with others, thereby educating their audience.
Public presentations are an effective method for teaching concepts, and problem solving procedures. A good presentation should lead to increased attentiveness, learning and performance.
Food Review participants were required to design a menu and place setting, and bring one food item from the menu, as well as the place setting and centerpiece.
Participants are evaluated on their presentation of the place setting, knowledge of the nutritional value of their meals and their interview.
Participants included Lauren Engebretson of Alexandria (Chippewans), Rebecca Mateer of Alexandria (GoBees), Rachel Kokett of Alexandria (Liberty Livewires) and Christina Drown of Osakis (Liberty Livewires).
All participants earned blue ribbons. Grand Champion in the 9th grade and above division went to Lauren Engebretson and Reserve Champion went to Rebecca Mateer. For the 3-5th grade division Grand Champion went to Rachel Kokett and Reserve Champion went to Christina Drown.
Two demonstrations and three illustrated presentations were given on topics of choice. These public presentations included topics such as how to make compost and use self defense.
Youth are evaluated on the ability to communicate their information; proper use of visuals; correct use of introduction, body, and conclusion in their demonstration, and the ability to answer questions.
Participants included Eric Branch, Carl Branch and Rebecca Mateer of Alexandria (Go Bees), Darren Radil of Alexandria (Lake Mary Troopers), Madison Floden of Carlos (Hoofbeats) and Austin Zarbok of Villard (Lucky Star).
Grand Champion for demonstrations Grades 3-8 went to Madison Floden and Reserve Champion to Austin Zarbok. For grades 9 and above, Eric and Carl Branch received Grand Champion and Darren Radil received Reserve Champion. Rebecca Mateer earned Honorable Mention.
