The Alexandria I team had wins over New London-Spicer and Willmar I to earn a spot in the District 5 VFW baseball championship Monday night where they again faced the Willmar I team in the double elimination tournament.
Alexandria, after defeating New London-Spicer 7-6 in the semifinals, looked as if they had things in hand early against Willmar, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning, but Willmar pecked away at starting pitcher Parker Bowden to score one in the second and another in the third to tie the game.
Bowden hunkered down on the mound the rest of the way, scattering a total of nine hits through eight innings, striking out four, then capped his night by scoring the winning run in the bottom of the eighth on an infield single with two outs.
That victory gave Alexandria a spot in the championship Monday, while Willmar fell into the loser’s bracket. They defeated top-seeded Morris in a 12-4 rout to earn their way back to the championship. Alexandria defeated Willmar 11-4 in the championship to earn a berth at state.
