Alexandria will resume play on Thursday
Four straight losses over the weekend dropped the Alexandria Beetles into sixth place in the Northwoods League’s North Division second half standings as of Monday.
The Beetles upended Willmar Wednesday night 9-7, but fell to the Stingers 5-1 Thursday. They were then swept by Waterloo on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Alexandria was off Monday, Tuesday and today, Wednesday for the All-Star series in Madison, Wisconsin. They resume play tomorrow, Thursday on the road for a two-game series at Mankato, before coming home to host Waterloo in a pair.
Will Fulmer’s double in the sixth broke a 5-5 deadlock and gave Alexandria a lead they would never relinquish in a 9-7 win over Willmar Wednesday night.
Fulmer went 2-for-4 at the plate, scoring a pair of runs as he doubled in the sixth and singled in the seventh.
The Beetles were able to hold off the Stingers, who could not overcome a three-run sixth inning deficit.
Willmar scored two runs in the seventh on a two-run single by Michael Suchy, but that was as close as they would get.
Ryan Padilla had a pair of hits in his four plate appearances. He drove in one run and scored twice, homering in the second inning and singling in the fourth inning.
Michael Reed got the win, improving his season record to 3-3. He allowed one run over two innings, struck out none, walked one and gave up two hits.
After a solid comeback effort Wednesday, the Beetles couldn’t find a repeat, falling to Willmar 5-1 Thursday.
Alexandria had the same number of hits as Willmar – eight – but could only produce one run, that coming in the second inning as Ryan Padilla reached base on a fielder’s choice, moving to second on a walk by Dylan Raper, and scoring as Matt Lowenstein singled.
Steve Weber was charged with his fifth loss of the season, going five innings, walking three, striking out four and allowing four runs.
In a back-and-forth game that saw the lead change hands five times, Waterloo used a two-run homer by Austin Barrett in the eighth to upend the Beetles 8-7.
It was Barrett’s second homer of the game, with his first coming in the fifth inning.
Alexandria’s offense knocked out 17 hits, while the Beetles’ pitching staff kept the Bucks to 13 hits in the game, but it was the extra base knocks that put the Beetles away.
Ben Moore had four hits in the game, while Will Fulmer and Robert Case each had three. Case also poked a three-run home run in the seventh.
Michael Reed took the loss for the Alexandria Beetles, lasting just three innings, walking four, striking out one and allowing four runs.
It was another high powered offensive game Saturday for the Beetles and the Bucks, who, between the two squads, pounded out 27 hits.
Matt Lowenstein had three hits for the Beetles, with Ben Moore and Tanner Vavra rapping two each.
Moore racked up two RBIs as he homered in the first inning and singled in the third.
Brandon Johnson ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with his first loss of the year. He lasted just three innings, walked one, struck out two, and allowed four runs.
The Waterloo Bucks hammered the Alexandria Beetles pitching as six hitters had a field day, combining for 12 hits, 12 RBIs and nine runs scored.
The slugfest from Saturday continued into the Sunday game as Waterloo outlasted the Beetles for a 12-11 win in which the two teams had 28 hits between them.
Alexandria jumped to an impressive 4-0 lead after the first inning, but saw Waterloo come right back with four runs in the top of the second.
From there, the two teams traded runs until the sixth inning, when the Bucks scored three, then added their final run in the seventh. That run proved to be the difference in the game.
In the ninth, the Beetles made a last ditch effort, cutting the Bucks’ lead to just one as Dylan Raper worked a one-out walk, moving to third on a single by Ryan Padilla with two outs. Stephen McGee then loaded the bases with a walk.
Tanner Vavra coaxed a walk off Waterloo’s Kellen Camus to bring home Raper and leave the bases loaded for Will Fulmer.
Fulmer then poked a full count shot to left field for the final out, cutting Alexandria’s rally short.
Fulmer, Case and Josh Carpenter all had a pair of hits in the game.
Caleb DeLee was charged with his second loss of the year. He lasted just one inning, walked none, struck out one, and allowed three runs.
