Strike Out Illiteracy
The Echo Press’ annual Strike Out Illiteracy bowling tournament is set for Tuesday, September 18 at the Garden Center Lanes in Alexandria.
Proceeds will go to the Newspapers in Education program, which provides newspapers and educational activities to area teachers for use in their classrooms.
Cost is $140 per team. There are also lane sponsorships for $100 and classroom sponsorships for $160.

Cystic fibrosis night at Runestone Raceway
Friday, July 27 will be cystic fibrosis night at the Runestone Raceway go-karts in Alexandria in honor of Cooper Reed, a racer in the Rookie Division who was diagnosed with the disease.
There will be a “fans in the stands” helmet pass for donations that will be combined with donations collected from fellow racers to go toward cystic fibrosis research.
Jam the Stands at Viking Speedway
In conjunction with the Minnesota Corn Growers Association, the Viking Speedway will hold its Jam the Stands night on Saturday, July 28, featuring free grandstand admission.
Coaches needed
District 206 has openings for coaches for the following programs: Discovery Middle School strength program, DMS football, DMS soccer and DMS tennis.

Beetles raise money
for cancer research
The Alexandria Beetles raised more than $2,600 for breast cancer research during their recent home game with the Mankato Moondogs. Beetles players and coaches wore pink jerseys, fans wore pink and the bases were tinted a shade of pink as well.
The pink pinstriped Beetles jerseys worn by players and coaches during the game were auctioned off, and a silent auction that included baseball memorabilia also helped to raise the funds.
5th-6th grade

Registration is open for Lakes Area Recreation tackle football for grades 5-6.
The program will meet Saturdays September 8-October 13 with grade 5 at 9:15 a.m. and grade 6 at 10:45 a.m. at Citizen’s Field behind Jefferson High School.
Practices will begin the week of August 27. There will be a parent meeting on Tuesday, August 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Lakes Area Recreation gym.
Cost is $70 and includes a reversible jersey.
Registration deadline is August 17 and is limited to 80 players for each grade.

Girls’ swim practice
Practice for the Cardinal girls’ swimming and diving team will be Monday-Friday, beginning August 13 from 8-10:30 a.m. for varsity athletes.
Varsity diving practice begins Monday, August 13, running from 9-10:30 a.m. Junior high divers are welcome at this time.
Junior high swimming practice for grades 7-8 will begin Monday, August 27 and run from 10:30 a.m.-noon.
An all-sports mass meeting for all varsity/junior varsity participants and their parents will be held Thursday, August 9 at 7 p.m. in the Jefferson High School gym.
A varsity parent/athlete swim team meeting will follow at 7:45 p.m. at JHS.
Before any athlete can practice, eligibility forms must be picked up, completed and returned to the school each athlete attends, along with a paid participation fee.
Athletic screens and physicals must be updated every third year.
4-H Night at the Beetles
The Alexandria Beetles will hold 4-H Night on Saturday, July 28.
Tickets for 4-H families can be purchased from county 4-H offices with tickets for the public available online at www.alexandriabeetles.com or at the gate the day of the game.
Jenny Klein walk/run fundraiser
There will be a 5K run/walk and kids fun run beginning at the Gardonville back parking lot in Brandon on Saturday, August 4 as part of the Jenny Klein fundraising event.
Registration is from 7-7:45 a.m. with the run/walk at 8 a.m. and the fun run at 9:15 a.m. There is a $20 registration fee for adults in the run/walk and the cost for 10 and younger is $10. There’s no cost for the fun run.
All proceeds will be used to offset medical expenses.

Minnesota High School Hall of Fame seeks nominees
The Minnesota High School Basketball Hall of Fame, a new venture featuring some of the most prominent names in Minnesota High School basketball, is seeking nominations for its inaugural class of inductees.

Teams and players are subject to a waiting period of 10 years, while coaches and other contributors must have a career consisting of at least 15 years.
Harvest Duathlon
The second annual Harvest Duathlon is set for Saturday, September 1 in Alexandria.
In addition, there will be a kids’ race for children 10 and younger August 31.

Lake Minnewaska triathlon
The 10th annual Lake Minnewaska triathlon will be Saturday, August 4 along the shores of Lake Minnewaska in Glenwood.
The course is a 400-yard swim parallel to the beach, 11.1-mile bike loop and 2.5-mile run.
