The Alexandria Classic Clippers returned home this past weekend and split a doubleheader with Becker to move its record to 11-2 after going 4-0 through two tournaments in early July.
Alexandria won the nightcap 2-1 over the Buzzards after falling 4-0 in game one on Saturday. Alexandria scored both of its runs in the first inning in game two on Saturday as Doug Breitkruetz and Joe Korkowski both singled and scored to make it a 2-1 game after one inning.
That turned out to be just enough offense for Breitkruetz on the mound. He finished off Becker by throwing six shutout innings after the first. He struck out four.
It was the Buzzards who used the early run support to earn the 4-0 win in game one. They scored three times in the third on the back of four hits, including two doubles. Becker added another one in the fifth off of starter Mike Forester as they saddled him with the loss.
Alexandria was held hitless until a leadoff single by Bryan Boutain in the sixth inning. Breitkruetz and Randy Roers added singles in the seventh, but a strikeout ended the threat and the game in a shutout.
The loss snapped what was a seven-game winning streak for Alexandria after going 4-0 through two tournaments earlier this month. The Classic Clippers came back from the six-team Cold Spring tournament July 14-15 with a 3-2 win over Cold Spring and a 6-1 win over Monticello. That came after taking care of business in the Mid-Summer tournament in Menahga with a 7-4 win over Perham and a 1-0 victory over the Searles Bullheads on July 7.
Alexandria needed every last out to rally for the 3-2 win over Cold Spring on July 15. The Classic Clippers trailed 2-0 entering the top of the seventh before three runs turned that deficit into their 10th win of the season.
Cold Spring was one out away from securing the win when Alexandria staved off elimination with a walk and two straight hits. Korkowski got the biggest of those hits when he connected on his third double of the tournament to score Greg Serum and Mitch Steidl to tie the game. That brought Matt Strong to the plate, who didn’t disappoint as he singled to right field for the 3-2 lead.
Serum made sure that held up in the bottom of the seventh. He induced a fly out and two ground balls to finish what he started on the mound. Serum went the distance, allowing single runs in the second and third innings but keeping Cold Spring at bay throughout the game.
Pitching was the story a day earlier too as Forester tossed a complete-game in the 6-1 win over Monticello. He allowed his team to build a big lead by posting zeroes through the first six innings before Monticello got to him for its lone run in the seventh.
Boutain and Korkowski backed Forester with big days at the plate. Boutain had three hits, drove in two runs and scored two himself. Korkowski also had three hits, including two doubles.
Breitkreutz did a little bit of everything in helping his team to a 7-4 win over the Perham Silver Pirates. Breitkreutz went 4-for-4 at the plate, while also holding Perham scoreless over the final four innings to pick up the pitching win. Boutain also added two hits in the win.
The Classic Clippers used a single run in the top of the first inning to hold off Searles earlier that day. Kurtis Kuhn scored on a two-out hit by Lee Backhaus for what turned out to be the game winner.
Korkowski made sure of that by pitching a gem for Alexandria. He tossed a three-hitter and his defense committed just one error behind him to keep the Bullheads from mounting many scoring threats.
