Brandon-Evansville earned a spot in the Region 16C baseball playoffs last weekend after knocking off both Ashby and Kensington.

The winner of the Osakis/Kensington game this Saturday will advance to the Region 16C tournament and will play the Bluedogs on Sunday, July 22 to decide seeding.

Bluedogs 4, Ashby 2

It was a pitcher’s duel between Collin Modahl of the Brandon-Evansville Bluedogs and Jordan Lillimon of the Ashby A’s as the two teams opened the Resorters West playoffs Saturday night.

Modahl emerged with the victory as the Bluedogs finished with a 2-0 edge. Modahl went eight innings, allowing just four hits while striking out 11.

Lillemon was just as strong for the A’s, going eight innings and allowing two runs on five hits, enough for Brandon-Evansville to earn the victory.

The Bluedogs scratched out single runs in the third and the fourth as Nate Meissner led off with a single in the first of those frames, advancing as Ryan Hendrickson doubled and Lee Nelson followed with a sacrifice fly to score Meissner.

In the fourth, Josh Meissner hit a one-out single, moving to second on a misplayed ball in right field.

Adam Johnson advanced Meissner to third with a groundout before Meissner scored the second and final run of the game on a passed ball.

Ryan Hendrickson picked up the save as he pitched the ninth inning.

Bluedogs 7, Kensington 0

On Sunday, the Bluedogs took on the Kensington Norsemen in the winners’ bracket of the Resorters West playoffs, winning 7-0 to advance to the championship game.

Brent Meissner led off the second inning by reaching first after being hit by a pitch, then moved to second on an errant pickoff attempt. He landed on third as Monte Hinzmann hit into a ground out, then scored on a squeeze bunt by Chris Shea.

In the fifth inning, the Bluedogs plated four runs as Modahl was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and then stole second base.  After Nate Meissner flew out to deep center, Ryan Hendrickson was walked.  Lee Nelson then laced a single to left field, scoring Modahl and advancing Hendrickson to third base.  Hendrickson then scored on a passed ball.  Brent Meissner walked, followed by a two-run double by Hinzmann, scoring Nelson and Meissner.

The Bluedogs added a single run in the sixth to push the score to 6-0.  Modahl reached first base on an error, then stole second base.  He advanced to third on a single by Nate Meissner, and scored when the Norsemen pitcher balked.

The final Bluedogs’ run came in the eighth inning on a homerun by Nate Meissner to deep left field.

Adam Johnson threw a gem for the Bluedogs, going all nine innings, allowing only two hits, walking one batter and striking out 17 Norsemen hitters.

The Region 16C tournament will begin Saturday, August 4 in Perham.
