The Osakis Legion picked up three victories in its tournament over the weekend of June 29-30, defeating the Alexandria VFW II team, Long Prairie and Waite Park.

OSAKIS 6,

ALEX VFW II 5

Mitch Herzog picked up the 6-5 win over Alexandria in relief of Grayson Fortenberry as Osakis scored a solo run in the seventh for a walk-off victory.

Osakis had an early 2-0 lead after Jordan Frederick reached on a fielder’s choice, advancing on Drew Fearing’s single and coming home as Doug Zimmel hit a sacrifice fly. Fearing also scored in that inning as Herzog singled.

Two more runs scored in the second as both Devin Waldvogel and Hunter Scherr picked up hits then scored as Lane Berberich hit a sacrifice and Frederick and Fearing then singled.

Alexandria put a run on the board in the top of the third as Leif Johnson opened with a walk, then advanced on a one-out walk to Ben Corson. A single by Bubba Karger brought home Johnson.

A hiccup in Osakis’ game saw Alexandria score three more times in the top of the fifth as a walk to Corson, a fielder’s choice off the bat of Brody Erdman and an error by the second baseman allowed Corson to score. A single off the bat of Mitchell Thoennes drove in the other two runs.

Osakis got back one of those runs in the bottom of the inning as Fearing reached on an error, then came home as Zimmel singled.

Alexandria tied the game in the top of the sixth on a double by Micah Hedstrom, who advanced on a single by Hockert and scored on a fielder’s choice by Johnson.

It was in the bottom of the seventh that Frederick singled, advanced on a walk to Fearing and scored the winning run on a single by Zimmel.

LONG PRAIRIE 1

Zimmel had just one hitch in what was nearly a perfect game as he allowed one run – that a solo homer in the fourth off the bat of Duane Miller as he picked up the 8-1 win over Long Prairie. That home run was also the only hit allowed.

Osakis, on the other hand, put together 13 hits to bring home eight runs.

Frederick and Zimmel both had three hits in the game, while Fearing and Devin Waldvogel each scored twice. Driving in one run each were Lane Berberich, Frederick, Fearing, Zimmel, Herzog, Waldvogel, Grayson Fortenberry and Jordan Mack.

WAITE PARK 2

Osakis needed another last ditch effort to win their third game, edging Waite Park 3-2 on a walk-off by Herzog.

After climbing to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the fourth by Frederick and Fearing, Waite Park cut the deficit in half with a run in the fifth, then tied the game with a run in the sixth, both off reliever Lane Berberich.

But Berberich shut down Waite Park in the top of the seventh with a strike out, a ground ball out and a fly ball out to retire the side and give Osakis its final chance of the game.

Herzog reached base on a one-out single, then advanced on a walk to Jordan Mack, scoring the winning run on a single by Scherr.

Berberich picked up the win in relief of Frederick, who went the first three innings.

The Osakis reliever helped his own cause by knocking out a pair of hits and driving in one run. Frederick, Fearing, Herzog and Scherr each had one hit apiece.

Osakis is slated to host Morris tonight, Friday, and Eden Valley-Watkins tomorrow. They will host Browerville Tuesday.
