Walk-n-Talk looks at hazelnut research

Join University of Minnesota researchers, Rural Advantage, and University of Minnesota Extension for an afternoon of hybrid hazelnut discussion. The Hybrid Hazelnut Research Update Walk-n-Talk will be held Thursday, July 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Rosemount Research and Outreach Center at UMore Park in Rosemount, Minnesota.

University of Minnesota hazelnut researcher Lois Braun will lead the walk-n-talk. Braun has three research trials currently being conducted at the field site. The main research focuses on vegetative propagation methods that would allow for growers to have more uniform stock to choose from. Attendees of the walk-n-talk will learn about the mound layering and the stem cutting propagation techniques. These types of propagation allow researchers to ‘clone’ the hybrid hazelnuts that show the desired nut and plant characteristics. A second research trial is looking at potassium fertilization, and a third is looking at pruning and coppicing affects.

All are welcome to attend this free event. No pre-registration is required. This is an outdoor event. Please dress accordingly.

Rosemount Research and Outreach Center (UMore Park) – 1605 160th Street West, Rosemount, MN

From the Rosemount ROC’s office on Co Rd 46 / 160th Street West:

Travel a few 100 yards west to Station Trail Road (gravel) and turn north. Veer north (left) onto 154th Street (gravel). You will be headed towards white turkey barns tucked into a windbreak. Turn right/east before the windbreak. The road curves around the windbreak. The hazelnuts will be along the east side of the windbreak.

There will be a sign saying, “Poultry Research – Authorized Personnel Only.” This sign can be ignored unless you have been in recent contact with diseased poultry.
