Minnesota Farmers Union (MFU) held its bi-annual leadership retreat focusing on the future of farming and rural communities. The leadership conference was held at Arrowwood Resort in Alexandria, June 25-27.
“We had a great turnout from all parts of Minnesota at our Focus on the Future retreat, showing that family farming and rural Minnesota is strong,” said Doug Peterson, MFU president. “The purpose of this retreat was to talk about where we have been as farmers and to plan our future goals in this changing economy. The speakers and conversations were lively and thought-provoking, and the Minnesota Farmers Union is positioned to continue our fight for family farmers and rural communities in Minnesota.”
WCCO personality Don Shelby was the keynote speaker and covered global warming and its impact on farming. Tom Buis, Growth Energy CEO, talked about the importance of biofuels to rural America and the United States economy. MFU legal counsel Dave Velde of Alexandria provided key points about farm ownership, its legacy and transitioning the farm to the next generation. Don Davis of Forum Communications and Tom Rothman of Minnesota Farm Network led a communications panel discussion about how to promote the MFU message.
