A Mel Lamar Tribute concert will be performed at the Red Willow Arts Coalition free concert on Thursday, July 5 at 7 p.m. on the lawn at the Douglas County Courthouse in Alexandria.
Lamar is not only an amazing teacher and musician, but has had many incredible experiences in his life. He has seen and met talents such as Mel Torme, Sarah Vaughn, Vic Damone, Lena Horne, Billy Eckstein, Carmen MaCrae, Henny Youngman, Dorothy Lamour, The Mills Brothers, The Harmonicats, The Four Lads and The Platters.
Lamar not only met them, he played guitar in the band that backed them when they appeared in Milwaukee.
For seven years he performed seven nights a week as a member of The Ricco at Gallaghers Steakhouse in Milwaukee.
A native of nearby Racine, Lamar ran a music store by day and played jazz by night. He made the move to Minnesota in 1981 and began teaching guitar at Carlson Music in Alexandria in 1983. He has taught hundreds of students over the years, and has inspired many great players.
Lamar continues to teach at Carlson Music, and still loves performing whenever he gets the chance.
Present and past students will join many of the area's finest musicians to honor Lamar with an evening of great music.
Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. In the event of inclement weather, listen to KXRA 1400 AM for cancellation information.
The series is sponsored by Anderson Funeral Home and Elden's Fresh Foods. This concert is sponsored by Carlson's Music.
The Red Willow Arts Coalition is a nonprofit organization with a mission to provide the community with access to more musical experiences.
