Osakis Legion: Team takes one of three
Osakis will hot its home tournament today and tomorrow
The Osakis Legion baseball team went 1-2 in its last three games and highlighted that stretch with a triple play this past week.
Osakis fell to Waite Park 4-1 on Tuesday after beating the Alexandria VFW II team 9-5. They also got shutout in a 2-0 game against Parkers Prairie this past Sunday.
Osakis had just five hits in the 4-1 loss to Waite Park. Lane Berberich, Jordan Frederick, Grayson Fortenberry, Mitch Herzog and Hunter Scherr all had one apiece. They couldn’t turn those into runs until the eighth inning when Herzog led off with a single and came in on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Frederick.
Frederick took the loss in seven innings of work. He allowed four earned runs on five hits. He struck out four. Doug Zimmel worked a scoreless eighth to close things out.
Osakis got the bats going early in a win over the Alexandria VFW II team. Frederick, Drew Fearing, Zimmel, Fortenberry and Brandon Giesler put together five straight hits to help Osakis score five runs in the first.
Osakis would take a four-run lead into the ninth when they ended the game in dramatic fashion. A single and an error put runners on first and second with nobody out. That’s when Scherr induced a ground ball to third that started a 5-4-3 triple play that ended it.
Giesler got the win on the mound after throwing three scoreless innings in relief of Berberich. Giesler didn’t allow a hit, while walking two and striking out two.
Fearing led the offense with three hits, including a double and a triple. Zimmel and Fortenberry both added two hits and two RBIs, while Giesler and Frederick added two hits and two runs scored apiece.
Osakis couldn’t find that same offensive production in a 2-0 loss to Parkers Prairie in Urbank on Sunday. Osakis had just five hits in the game and couldn’t take advantage of six walks.
Parkers Prairie scored lone runs in the first and second innings. They started a two-out rally with a single and a walk in the second. A double would follow as Parkers Prairie took a 2-0 lead that it would not relinquish.
At 2-2 this summer, Osakis will now turn its attention to its home tournament, which starts today, Friday. Osakis will host Alexandria at 4 p.m. They will then take on Waite Park at 8:30 Saturday morning before battling Long Prairie at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon.
