VFW I baseball: Alexandria takes doubleheader from Fargo
Lucas, Thompson pitch their way to wins for Alexandria
The Alexandria VFW I got two more wins on Monday night by sweeping a doubleheader in Fargo.
Alexandria ran away in game two with a 14-2 win after scoring late to secure a 4-1 win in the opener. Spencer Lucas went the first five innings in the nightcap before Toby Helgeson closed things out over the final two innings on the mound.
Alexandria opened the scoring with a six-run first inning. Jake Booth, Travis Krueger, Mitch Thompson, Danny Kuhn, Jake Bear and Grant Toivonen all had hits in the inning to help their team take a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.
Thompson earned the win with a complete-game performance in the opener. His only blemish came in the third inning when Fargo took a 1-0 lead behind two hits in the inning.
Thompson bounced back with four scoreless innings after that. He struck out five over that span, including the final two batters he faced in the seventh inning to close out the win.
His team got him the necessary run support with three runs in the top of the sixth. Thompson, Booth and Bear all scored in the inning before Kaden Anderson added an insurance run in the seventh.
Alexandria will be in Starbuck tonight, Friday, for a 6 p.m. first pitch. They will host their second tournament of the summer at Knute Nelson Field on July 13-15. The field in that tournament will include teams from Osakis, Worthington, Madison, Proctor, Rocori and Elk River.
