Soccer: Two teams grab titles at Walmart All-American Cup
Alexandria’s Redbird Soccer club saw its U14 boys and U19 girls come home with tournament championships after sending 148 athletes on nine teams to the Wal-mart All American Soccer Cup in Blaine June 15-17.
Alexandria’s U14 boys won their flight by taking all three games in pool play, then defeating Woodbury in the championship game.
“The team played solid in all aspects of the game for the entire tournament, but the defense especially stood out, as all four victories were shutouts,” said Shawn Thelen, director of coaching and player development for the Alexandria Area Soccer Association.
Alexandria’s U19 girls also advanced to the title game on the back of two wins and a tie to face Minneapolis Pegasus.
“The game went into a double overtime, then to a shootout,” said Thelen, who coaches the U19 girls. “At the end of the shootout, Redbird striker Emily Funk secured the win with a goal.”
Finishing third were the U16 boys, U13 boys and U12 girls, while the U19 boys, U16 girls, U15 girls and U13 girls were fourth.
Last weekend, the U19 girls finished second in the Tri-City soccer tournament in Fargo as they fell to the Pierre Insanity team 4-1 in the championship.
The U14 boys and the U12 girls were third, the U13 boys, U19 boys and U15 girls were fourth, the U16 boys and U16 girls were fifth and the U13 girls were sixth.
All nine Redbird teams will be competing again this weekend at the Burnsville Fire Cup.
