Hole-in-one

Jim May recorded a hole-in-one at the Geneva Golf Club on June 21.

May, who was golfing with Louie Seeze, Dave Hard and Dick Stewart, aced the 121-yard Island No. 4 using a 7-iron.

Alexandria native writes story on love of golf

Alexandria native Kara Buckner, daughter of Bill and Sandy Buckner, has written an article titled “A Father’s Love of the Game,” published in Minnesota Golf Magazine recently.

The article is a personal account of Buckner’s learning from her father to play and love the game of golf, and the experiences and life lessons they shared because of it.

Eagles Horseshoe fundraiser

The Alexandria Eagles Horseshoe League is holding a fundraiser pork chop dinner on Friday, June 29 from 5:30-8 p.m. at the Eagles Club on Highway 29 in Alexandria.

There will be pork chops on the grill, corn on the cob, beans and bacon and potato salad.

Everyone is welcome.

Golden K tennis camp

The Golden Kiwanis of Alexandria are sponsoring a free week-long tennis camp for students in grades 3-6 July 9-13.

The camp will be held at Discovery Middle School and will be under the direction of Hal Miller and Steve Haug, along with Cardinal varsity players.

The 23rd camp will feature the new “Quick Start” tennis program and on Tuesday, July 10 will feature special guest Hayley Horning Shibley, the USTA Northern representative for youth tennis.

Botzet memorial run/walk

The first Kortni Botzet memorial 5K run/walk and kids’ fun run will be held Saturday, July 14 at the Carlos Elementary School.

Proceeds from the event will go toward a scholarship fund in Botzet’s name, with her class (class of 2022) being the first recipients.

Registration will be at 7:30 a.m., with the 5K run/walk beginning at 8 a.m. and the kids’ fun run at 9:15 a.m.

Cost is $20 for the 5K, and the kids’ fun run is free.

Lake Minnewaska triathlon

The 10th annual Lake Minnewaska triathlon will be Saturday, August 4 along the shores of Lake Minnewaska in Glenwood.

The course is a 400-yard swim parallel to the beach, 11.1-mile bike loop and 2.5-mile run.

Shalom runs

Shalom Lutheran Church will hold its second annual 5K/10K, 1-mile walk and 1K kids’ run on Wednesday, July 4 beginning with registration at the church at 7 a.m.

The 5K and 10K runs will begin at 8 a.m. with the 1-mile walk at 8:15 a.m. and the kids’ run at 9:30 a.m.

Mount Carmel golf tourney

The 17th annual Mount Carmel golf tournament is set for Friday, July 13 at the Lake Miltona Golf Course.

There will be an 11 a.m. lunch and registration followed by a noon shotgun start. There will be music and appetizers at 4:30 p.m. with an Italian dinner and prizes at 5:30 p.m. at the lodge.

Cost is $100 per person for golf, lunch and dinner, or $25 per person for dinner only.

The tournament benefits the Mount Carmel Ministries family camperships.

Military All-Stars at Knute Nelson

The All-Stars of the Resorters baseball league will host the U.S. Military All-Stars on Saturday, June 30 at 7:05 p.m. at Knute Nelson Memorial Park in Alexandria.

The cost is $5 for general admission and $15 for the hospitality deck.

Lakes Area gymnastics

Lakes Area Recreation is offering gymnastics day camps from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. throughout the summer.

No gymnastics experience is required and each week will have a different challenge.

Camps run from July 16-20, July 23-27, August 6-10, August 20-24 and August 27-31.

Cost is $125 per week and camps are for ages 7 and older.

FCA/YMCA golf scramble

The Alexandria Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and the Alexandria Area YMCA will hold a golf scramble on Monday, July 23 at the Alexandria Golf Club, with the proceeds supporting the YMCA financial assistance program and the FCA camp scholarships.

Registration is at 11:45 a.m. with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Dinner and a program will begin at 5 p.m.

Registration includes golf, cart, dinner and the program.

Cost is $125 per person or $500 per team and is limited to 32 teams.

Hoelscher baseball camp

Nate Hoelscher, former pitcher for the Kansas City Royals, will hold a baseball camp for those in grades 5-6 interested in learning and developing the fundamentals of fielding, hitting and pitching.

The camp runs Monday-Friday, June 25-29 from 9 a.m.-noon for 5th graders and 1-4 p.m. for 6th graders.

Scott Dirck’s Golf Academy holding sessions

Scott Dirck’s Golf Academy at the Geneva Golf Club will be holding two junior golf sessions on Thursday, June 21 from 9-11 a.m. for ages 3-9 and Friday, June 22 from 9-11 a.m. for ages 10-13.

There will be several stations for teaching etiquette, long game, short game and putting in a safe and fun environment.

Each session will run for six consecutive weeks.

AGC junior golf academy

The Alexandria Golf Club’s Junior Golf Academy started June 14 and will run through August 24.

Lisa Grimes, AGC’s director of instruction, will work with kids ages 5-10 on Thursday mornings and ages 11-15 on Friday mornings. The program is open to all kids in the area.

Alexandria boys’ basketball youth league

The Alexandria boys’ basketball program will hold a youth league to help provide players with the chance to learn and develop.

Led by Cardinal head coach Forrest Witt, the program is for players in 4th-7th grade on Mondays and Wednesdays from June 25 through July 18.
