The Alexandria School District hired Kraus-Anderson Construction Company (KA) as construction manager to build a new $65.15 million senior high school that will house 1,400 students.
KA will construct the new school on a 167-acre site located at 50th Avenue and Pioneer Road in Alexandria. It will replace the current 10-12 grade school and bring in 9th graders.
Construction will start in July and is expected to finish in time for the beginning of the 2014 school year.
The new 280,000-square-foot school will feature two three-story academic wings that include 36 classrooms, 12 learning spaces, science labs, technology/engineering lab, art rooms, a media center and special education classrooms.
It will also include new athletic fields and a stadium, an activities wing with a three-station gymnasium and a performing arts wing with music spaces, as well as a 1,000-seat auditorium.
Available to the public and organizations for activities and events, the new facility features an eco-friendly, energy-efficient design with outdoor green areas.
KA was selected through a Request for Proposal (RFP) process in 2010 and has been working with the school to provide accurate cost analyses through the building referendum process.
“Kraus-Anderson has been an essential partner with the new high school project from the beginning and has provided support, key data and expertise that led to a successful referendum,” said Dr. Terry Quist, Alexandria superintendent of schools.
KA worked closely with the school, architects and the community through user group meetings to help facilitate the long process, including its conceptual design and development.
“We are extremely pleased to have been selected to build the new high school in Alexandria,” said John Huenink, KA’s vice president and director of the company’s education group. “We expect the new high school to be an extraordinary educational facility and a beacon in the Alexandria community.”
