Legion baseball: Alexandria upends Marshall

The Fat Daddy’s Alexandria American Legion Post 87 baseball team bounced back from a sweep against West Fargo with one of its better all-around games of the young summer on Tuesday night.

Post 87 pounded out 11 hits and got a strong performance from Blake Stockert on the mound to beat Marshall 11-1 in a league game that was shortened by the 10-run rule after seven innings. Six of those 11 hits went for extra bases as Alexandria connected for five doubles and a home run.

“It was a good team win for Alexandria against a team that we will definitely see again in the district playoffs,” head coach Kevin Engebretson said. “There are always things to work on as we did miss a few signs and botched a few situations on the bases, but overall, we were pleased with how we played and put together an overall nice game.”

AJ Anderson led the offensive attack with a 3-for-3 day at the plate. He came up in a 3-1 game in the sixth and blasted a pitch over the fence in left-center field for a three-run home run. Anderson added a double, a single and a walk to his line as he finished with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Alexandria wasn’t done piling on in the sixth. Logan Serum followed Anderson with a double before Beau Backhaus singled to set the stage for Pat Leary. He delivered a two-run double that made it 8-1 and gave Post 87 all the momentum.

That run support was more than enough for Blake Stockert. The lefty cruised through the Marshall lineup all night, allowing just one hit in the complete-game victory. Marshall got an unearned run off him in the second before Stockert took control, striking out nine and walking nobody.

“Blake looked very sharp,” Engebretson said. “Once we built a lead, he pitched very efficiently and just pounded the strike zone to keep his pitch count low. When our pitchers throw strikes and spot up like he did tonight, we can be a really competitive ball club.”

The win gave Alexandria some momentum going into a tough field at the Grand Rapids Tournament this weekend. Post 87 will take on teams from Hill-Murray, St. Michael-Albertville, Centennial and Farmington. If they place first or second in pool play, Alexandria would battle in the championship round on Sunday.
