Johnson, Roste set new state JO track and field marks

Alexandria athletes bring home seven first place finishes

Alexandria’s Wensia Johnson and Jaran Roste set new Junior Olympic state records last week at the Minnesota Junior Olympic Track and field competition in Eagan.

Johnson ran a 25.17 in the 200-meter dash while finishing first in the intermediate division. The previous record was 25.31, set in 1999.

Roste’s mark came in the youth division as his triple jump distance of 11.85 meters (38’ 10.5”) broke the old record of 11.61, set in 2007.

Johnson, running for Track Minnesota, also finished first in the 100-meter dash with a 12.26, and helped lead the 4x100 relay to first with a time of 50.16. Johnson shared the relay honors with Elise Anderson, Judaisha Jackson and Taloria Stiffen.

Roste also picked up a first in the high jump with a leap of 5’1” and second in the long jump with a distance of 18’8”.

Alexandria had several other athletes competing, with JeAnna Miller finishing first in the youth girls’ high jump with a leap of 4’11” and Aleah Miller first in the 800-meter run in 3:23.99 in the sub-bantam division.

Patricia Johnson had a second place finish in the 4x400 relay, Bethany Miller was second in the high jump in the midget division and Jaelyn Miller was second in the 1,500-meter run in the sub-bantam division.

The top eight place finishers in each event from the state meet advanced to the USATF Region 8 Junior Olympic track and field championships July 5-8 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

The top five placers will then advance to the 2012 USATF National meet July 23-29 at Hughes Stadium at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland.

USATF Minnesota conducts championships for all age groups (youth through masters) in both indoor and outdoor track and field.
