Osakis softball: Zimmel is MVP

The Osakis softball team named Sabrina Zimmel its team MVP and Gold Glove Award winner recently.

Zimmel wrapped up her career in Osakis with another strong all-around season. She finished 8-4 from the rubber, striking out 93 batters and finishing with an ERA of 2.96.

Her offense was equally as important to this team. She led Osakis with five home runs and 25 RBIs to go along with a .351 batting average. Zimmel was named second team all state, All-Prairie Conference and All-Section 5A.

Alex Anderson joined her on all three of those teams. She was the main table-setter for this team from the leadoff position. Anderson won the Silver Stick Award from her team after hitting .574 with 35 base hits in 61 at-bats. She led the team with 29 runs and an on-base percentage of .618.

Lauren Silbernick and Tonya Hetland were also named All-Prairie Conference, while Janna Juntunen was an honorable-mention selection.

Hetland was honorable mention all state and the team’s Silverstreak Award winner. She hit .362 this spring with 18 RBIs, 23 runs scored, six doubles and two home runs.

Silbernick was equally as efficient from the plate, hitting .382 in 55 at-bats. She added 18 RBIs and pitched 26 innings with a 2.15 ERA.

Kaitlin Deel wrapped up the Osakis team-award winners by being the most improved player. Deel made the most out of her 15 at-bats this season, hitting .333, scoring five times and driving in three.

The Silverstreaks earned as many awards off the field as they did on it. Mackenzie Staloch, Rachelle Rajdl, Dani Chisholm, Silbernick, Anderson, Hetland and Alida Hovey earned All-Prairie Conference academic awards. Anderson, Hetland and Hovey were academic all state and the team earned a Gold Award with a cumulative GPA above 3.75.

On the field, Osakis finished with a 12-5 record overall. The Silverstreaks finished second in the Prairie North behind Browerville with an 8-3 league mark.
