Beetles baseball: Alexandria wins three moreThe Beetles defeated Mankato and split four with Waterloo
After winning three of five outings over the weekend, the Alexandria Beetles improved to 7-11 in the Northwoods League’s North Division standings and are now in sixth place.
The Mankato MoonDogs lead the division with a 14-5 mark.
Beetles 6, Mankato 4
Alexandria trailed early in this game 3-1, but Steve Weber came in to relieve Mitchell Babb on the mound for five and a third innings of scoreless ball, allowing the Beetles to get back in the game.
In the fifth, Alexandria got back a run as Johnny Tolson doubled, then came home on a Ben Moore triple.
It was the sixth inning that gave the Beetles their advantage as Jared Musgrove opened with a walk, followed by a one-out walk to Tanner Vanva. A single by Josh Carpenter loaded the bases, and Tolson reached on a fielder’s choice that brought in both Vavra and Musgrove.
Carpenter crossed the plate for run No. 3 in the inning on a ground out by Ben Moore, with Tolson scoring the final run of the frame on a wild pitch.
Anthony Bazzani, in his second inning of the game, picked up the save after allowing just one run in the ninth.
Carpenter and Tolson both had two hits in the game, while Vavra, Moore, David Garcia, Josh Guerra, Matt Beaty and Musgrove each had one.
Weber picked up the win in relief.
Waterloo 11, Beetles 7
A five-run first inning put Alexandria so far behind in its game against Waterloo Thursday that the Beetles were never able to gain any ground in an 11-7 loss.
The Bucks also added three runs in the third against reliever Shawn Riesgraf as Waterloo’s advantage was 8-3 before Alexandria got on the board.
The Beetles finally scored in the fourth as Jimmy Pickens led off the top of the inning with a solo home run, followed by a one-out homer off the bat of Ryan Padilla.
Two more runs came across in the fifth and the sixth, and a final run in the sixth gave Alexandria seven runs, but Waterloo had extended its lead to 11 to get the win.
Of Alexandria’s eight hits in the game, Pickens and Padilla each had two. Fulmer, Garcia, Tolson, Moore, Beaty, Musgrove and Carpenter each had one.
Alex Lakatos took the loss despite not finishing the first inning.
Beetles 7, Waterloo 5
Game two against the Bucks on Friday night saw Alexandria get a little revenge as the Beetles scored seven, then held off Waterloo for a 7-5 win.
The Bucks put five runs on the board in the seventh, but couldn’t find any more offense.
Alexandria scored once in the third, then added three in the fourth and three more in the seventh.
Pickens and Guerra paced the Beetles’ offense with three hits each, while Fulmer added two. Fulmer and Guerra both had two runs batted in.
Jon Reed got the win as he started for Alexandria, going six innings and giving up just three hits. Bazzani earned the save, pitching the final inning.
Waterloo 10, Beetles 5
The rubber game of the series against Waterloo went to the Bucks Saturday night as Alexandria saw a 2-1 lead disappear in the seventh.
Waterloo knocked in four runs in the bottom of that inning, then added five more in the eighth to separate themselves with a 10-2 lead.
Alexandria tried to make a comeback, scoring three times in the ninth, but had just too much ground to make up.
Padilla had three hits to lead Alexandria, with Garcia and Carpenter adding two hits each. Fulmer, Pickens, Moore and Guerra had one hit each.
Andrew Busby was tagged with the loss in relief, tossing just one inning, but giving up four runs on four hits.
Beetles 7, Waterloo 6
The Beetles evened the series with Waterloo as they scored three runs in the top of the eighth to edge the Bucks.
Waterloo led 1-0 after three frames, then 4-2 after five, but Alexandria steadily worked its way back in with a run in the sixth, one in the seventh and three in the eighth.
Vavra knocked out three hits in the game, driving in a pair of runs, with Pickens, Padilla and Garcia each adding two hits. Tolson, Moore and Guerra had one each.
Reliever Mitchell Babb gave up two runs in the bottom of the eighth to earn the win, with Bazzani again getting the save.
