Around the world in 180 days

Students in grades 1-6 at Miltona Science Magnet School had the opportunity to explore the world through a geography program called The Passport Club this year.

Each student received a passport book, chose their individual level of study and collected postage stamps as they learned some or all of the world's countries over the course of the school year.

There are levels to choose from. In Level One, students can learn about 40 countries and the seven continents by the end of the school year.

If they choose Level Five, they learn all of the world's countries plus 40 capital cities, the continents, oceans, seas, deserts and mountain ranges by the end of the school year.

Each month, students are checked by parents, grandparents and community volunteers and receive postage stamps in their passport from some of the countries they have learned about.

They get a new study map with different locations for the next month and the process continues throughout the year.

Area businesses provided prizes and treats to every student just for trying their best to learn the locations.

They also received prizes based on the number of locations learned throughout the school year.

The top 12 students of the school learned 200 to 264 locations and received trophies and other prizes. The second group of 12 students learned 145 to 199 locations and received inflatable globes and other prizes. The third group of 20 students learned 100 to 144 locations and received ribbons.

Students that scored the highest for each grade received special awards. A drawing was also done for other prizes.
