Classic Clippers baseball: Alex splits opening weekend
The Alexandria Classic Clippers split their first two games of the season this past weekend.
The Alexandria Classic Clippers split their first two games of the season this past weekend.
The Clippers took down Loretto 3-0 in the opener on Saturday before falling 1-0 in a rematch of last year’s state tournament final against the Watertown Mudcatz.
Alexandria got a strong start from Greg Serum in the nightcap. He took a tough-luck loss after allowing an unearned run as two throwing errors cost the Clippers in the bottom of the sixth. Serum allowed just three hits. He walked none and struck out three.
Alexandria put together a few threats early but could not get the big hit it needed to push a run across.
Alexandria got just enough offense and another strong start to take the opener. Mike Forester tossed the complete-game shutout for the Clippers, allowing just four hits and two walks. He struck out seven.
The Clippers got him some runs to work with in the top of the second inning. Chris Wessel made his debut for the team by drawing a leadoff walk. He stole second and came around to score on Bill Ziegler’s two-out single. Wessel later drove in two runs himself with a base hit that gave his team a cushion in the fifth.
The Clippers will welcome in Dassel this Sunday for a doubleheader in their home opener at Knute Nelson. Games are slated for 2 and 4:30 p.m.
