Area track: Class A state meet kicks off for local athletes

The Osakis 4x400 relay team highlights the list of local athletes that will try to earn their way to the podium as the Class A state track and field meet gets started today.

The prelims kick off this afternoon at 3:30 with the girls’ 100-meter high hurdles. Ashby-Brandon-Evansville athlete Megan Friedrich will compete in that as she takes a seed time of 16.70 into the event.

The Silverstreaks’ 4x400 team of Makayla Hoglin, Cali Sadlemyer, Hannah Szech and Becka Sadlemyer will have to wait until the last event of the day to try and advance to the finals. They are set to kick off at 6:48 p.m. at Hamline University in St. Paul.

The Osakis 4x400 team enters the meet as the only team with a sub-four minute seed time. Their record-setting time of 3:59.02 that they ran at the Section 6A meet is more than three seconds faster than the second-seeded team from Blue Earth Area. The Osakis 4x200 team of Abby Stroup, Brittney Sadlemyer, Szech and Becka Sadlemyer will also run at 4:12 this afternoon.

Three other individual athletes will represent A-B-E with Friedrich at the meet. Caroline Jansen is scheduled to compete in the long jump at 3:30 this afternoon. Heather Strese will take on the field in the shot put and Tobias Wach will represent the A-B-E boys’ team in the discus.

West Central Area’s Kylee Fernholz will compete in the 800-meter run. The Knights will also send their 4x800 relay team of Abby VanKempen, Fernholz, Jen Froemming and Abby Peterson, while Brandi Otto of Minnewaska will compete in the shot put for the Lakers.

The Class A finals are scheduled to wrap up tomorrow, Saturday, with the boys’ 4x400-meter relay. Awards ceremonies for the boys and girls will follow at around 7 p.m.
