Alex girls' golf: State bound

The Alexandria girls’ golf team got top-10 finishes from Amundson, Thul and Bigger at the section tournament to secure its spot at state.

The Alexandria girls’ golf team proved to be the deepest team in the Section 8AAA field over two days early this week.

The Cardinals secured their spot in the Class AAA state tournament at Bunker Hills next week by shooting a two-day score of 686. Alexandria and St. Cloud Tech were tied after day one on Monday before the Cardinals outlasted the Tigers by seven strokes on day two.

“It was a grueling two days of competition on a tough golf course…in very warm conditions,” head coach Tim Zupfer said. “The athletes really needed to stay hydrated in order to focus and perform over 18 holes for about five hours in the heat.”

Alexandria was able to do that behind three top-10 individual finishes. Natalie Amundson proved to being up to the challenge on the big state as she finished third with a 167. The freshman carded an 83 on day one before wrapping up the tournament with an 84 on Tuesday.

“She was able to manage the golf course well and limit her mistakes,” Zupfer said.

Emily Thul was Alexandria’s second lowest scorer with a 172. That was good for seventh place overall. Amanda Bigger was tied for first after a day-one 81, but a 92 on Tuesday dropped her into ninth place.

“Amanda played well for all but 4-5 holes on Tuesday,” Zupfer said. “This was disappointing for her as she fell out of contention in the individual competition. However, her 81 the first day was key to our score for day one.”

Senior Caroline Roers was the fourth lowest scorer for Alexandria with a 180 (14th). Brynn Novotny was back in the lineup after struggling with a back injury. She carded a 181 (15th) and Shelby Iverson rounded out the Cardinals’ top six with a 200 (24th).

“Our depth was a key factor,” Zupfer said. “We used scores from five different players. In fact, our fourth and fifth players from day one were our first and third scores used on day two.”

The Cardinals hope that depth can help them against the best teams in the state next Tuesday and Wednesday. The AAA tournament will be played at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids. The girls are scheduled to begin teeing off at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
