Letter - Demonstrations truly hit home
All the emergency personnel, law enforcement, committee members and student actors and actresses demonstrated the terrible tragedy of an event like this that can occur. In addition to the ambulance to tend to those injured, this year even a funeral home came on sight to remove a “fatality.”
To the editor:
The Douglas County Safe Communities Coalition recently held two events that were very eye opening.
The Mock Car Crash at Jefferson High School started with a video viewed inside the school first, then proceeded to demonstrate a very lifelike car crash in the parking lot. All the emergency personnel, law enforcement, committee members and student actors and actresses demonstrated the terrible tragedy of an event like this that can occur. In addition to the ambulance to tend to those injured, this year even a funeral home came on sight to remove a “fatality.”
As students watched their fellow students acting out the accident scene, one could tell on their faces that it truly hit home.
The next week, a demonstration at Casey’s Amusement Park showed teenagers the danger of driving and texting. Again, the reality set in that it is a very dangerous situation, which can change many lives in an instant. All drivers, but in particular the younger inexperienced, learned what could happen in real life.
Thanks so much for all the people who helped make these two events possible. All the work will be worth it if only one life is saved.
Under the direction of Crystal Hoepner of the Safe Communities Coalition and Douglas County Public Health, and all the wonderful volunteers, I am hoping this work can continue. My thanks.
