Girls' golf: West Central Area season ends at section

The West Central Area girls’ golf team shot a 455 and saw its season come to an end at the Section 5A tournament last Thursday.

Morgan Grove led the Knights’ scoring with a 108. Katie Larkin shot a 113, Marissa Hayward a 116 and Tiffany Boysen a 119 to round out the top four.

“Marissa and Tiffany struggled today,” head coach Kari Kreft said. “Marissa had some water trouble and her short game failed her a bit. Tiffany was having a hard time getting her drive to straighten out and go where she wanted. It was a disappointing day for these two, but they had worked so hard this year and led us so well.”

Boysen earned two of the four team awards handed out after the tournament. She was named the Knights’ most valuable player and most dedicated. Larkin earned the Most Improved Award and McKenzie Hunter won the Rookie of the Year Award.

“It was a rebuilding year for us after losing four players from last year,” Kreft said. “Tiffany Boysen and Marissa Hayward went from being our number five and six golfers to our number one and two golfers. With this change came a lot of pressure and expectations that they placed upon themselves. They rose to those expectations, achieving career best scores for 18 and breaking the 100 barrier for the first time.

“The remaining tournament team, Morgan Grove, Katie Larkin, McKenzie Hunter and Vessa Bumgardner, saw extensive varsity playing time compared to last year and had many meets they broke career-best scoring records and then broke them again and again. Hailey Kreft, Paige Stark, Ivy Salazar, Ashton Hagen and Mariah Hennen also saw varsity playing time.”
