Track and field: Area athletes head to state
A-B-E, Osakis, West Central Area and Minnewaska all advanced competitors
Running the best time recorded in the state for Class A this year, the Osakis girls’ 4x400 relay team also shattered the Section 6A record set in 1998 by Breckenridge as they ran to a first place finish Thursday and earned a spot at state.
Makayla Hoglin, Cali Sadlemyer, Hannah Szech and Becka Sadlemyer burned up the field, running a 3:59.02 to race their way to the State Class A meet at Hamline next week, smashing the old mark of 4:02.57 at the Section 6A track and field championships.
The foursome outdistanced runner-up Pequot Lakes by 8.6 seconds in the competition.
“The 4x400 has been strong for many years, but running this fast at sections is really impressive, especially considering we had a 50-meter lead most of the race,” said Silverstreack coach Lee VanNyhuis.
Osakis will also send its 4x200 relay of Abby Stroup, Brittney Sadlemyer, Hannah Szech and Becka Sadlemyer to state after the squad took first in 1:46.84.
Ashby-Brandon-Evansville’s girls’ team finished tied for third overall in the meet, and will send four individuals to state as Heather Strese captured first in the shot put with a 39-9 toss.
Megan Friedrich finished second in the 100-meter hurdles to advance, while Caroline Jansen was second in the long jump and Tobias Wach was second in the discus.
“Megan placed second in the 100 hurdles when a runner from Long Prairie fell before her last hurdle, moving Megan into second,” said A-B-E head coach Jennifer Froemming. “Caroline had a personal best in the long jump and Toby had a personal best in the discus.”
West Central Area’s 800-meter runner Kylee Fernholz was second and the 4x800 relay team of Abby VanKempen, Fernholz, Jen Froeming and Abby Peterson finished second to advance.
Minnewaska’s Brandi Otto will represent the Lakers in the shot put after finishing second.
