Card boys' track and field: Beliveau falls just short of state berth

The Cardinal senior was in second place after the preliminaries, but ended up third in the discus

By: Lori Mork, Alexandria Echo Press

Cardinal senior Brandon Beliveau was so close to the State Class AA track and field meet – three inches close.

Standing in second place after the preliminaries of the discus – the top two places advance to state – Beliveau trailed Paul Kaczor of St. Cloud Tech by two feet and led the third place hurler by nearly one foot.

But a huge effort by ninth place Nathan Hruby of Thief River Falls pushed the Prowler senior past Beliveau by three inches and knocked the Redbird thrower out of his spot.

But that throw set a new mark for Beliveau by nearly 11 feet over his previous best.

His third place finish was part of Alexandria’s 14th place team finish in the Section 8AA meet Saturday.

Moorhead walked away with the meet behind 109 points.

Other top 10 finishes for the Cardinals came from Jesse Hacker in the shot put with a fifth place finish, Jimmy Lovrien with a ninth place in the 3,200-meter run, Colin Guetter in the discus with a ninth place and the 4x200 relay of Phil Pham, Lee Klein, Nathan Huss and James Holmquist, who ran a 1:32.98, a season best by nearly two seconds.

Alexandria got a season best from the 4x400 relay team of Holmquist, Huss, Alec Wosepka and Pham, who ran a 3:26.60, good for 13th place.
