Can you say record holders?

Cardinal senior Jamie Piepenburg and eighth grader Wensia Johnson broke two Section 8AA records apiece as they led the Alexandria girls’ track and field team to a repeat as section champions and advanced 10 girls to this weekend’s State Class AA meet.

Piepenburg set a new mark in the 3,200-meter run on Wednesday, running a 10:24.57 for first place, then added another Section record on Saturday in the 1,600-meter run, burning up the oval with a time of 4:54.19.

Johnson cruised to wins in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes, breaking both previous records during the preliminaries with times of 12:06 and 25.28; the 100-meter dash time having stood since 1981.

Also heading to state will be Megan Hasz, who finished second in the 3,200, and Bethany Hasz, who finished third, but qualified by time.

A first place went to Briquelle Bowden as well as she grabbed the 8AA title in the high jump with a leap of 5-2 to tie for the top spot, then going higher at 5-4 to win the jump-off.

Brittany Ludwig finished second in the discus with a throw of 120’2”, earning her spot.

Running to state were two relays as well, as Karly Betterman, B. Hasz, M. Hasz and Julia Sieling posted a 9:29.59 to edge out Moorhead by two seconds in the 4x800.

The 4x100 relay team of Johnson, Gabby Koel, Bowden and Madi Urman moved on as they finished first with a time of 49.47, just 0.2 seconds off the section record.

State meet action will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, June 8 as the girls’ 3,200-meter relay leads off the events and will continue on Saturday with the 4x800 relay at 9 a.m.
