Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie today reminded Minnesotans interested in running for public office that the candidate filing period for federal, state, county and some local offices ends Tuesday, June 5 at 5 p.m.
Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie today reminded Minnesotans interested in running for public office that the candidate filing period for federal, state, county and some local offices ends Tuesday, June 5 at 5 p.m.
"The Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State will be open until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 5 to accept federal, state and legislative candidate filings,” said Secretary of State Mark Ritchie.
Candidate filing requirements vary depending on the office, whether the candidate is a member of a major political party or a minor political party or an independent, and whether the office is partisan or nonpartisan. Candidates for State Senate, House of Representatives, and judicial offices have a choice to either file with the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State or in their county of residence. Candidates for U.S. Congress must file with the Secretary of State’s office. Candidates for county offices must file with their county auditor.
Major political parties have until Monday, August 27 to certify the names of their president and vice president candidates. Minor political party and independent candidates for president have until Tuesday, August 21 to submit their petitions. Candidates for municipal and school district offices will file between Tuesday, July 31 and Tuesday, August 14.

A listing of candidates who have filed for office is posted on the office website at: http://candidates.sos.state.mn.us/. This online application includes local candidates if those jurisdictions provide filing information to this office.
