Golf: Former SCSU golfer wins Kyle's Lakes Area Classic title

Justin Nelson won the championship on the final hole

It went right down to the wire to determine the winner of the Kyle’s Lakes Area Classic championship May 19 as Justin Nelson of Lakeville and Charlie West of Victoria battled it out through the final hole of regulation, leaving Nelson at the top.

West, a member of the St. Cloud State University Huskies team, led Nelson, a former member and now volunteer coach, by one stroke heading to the 17th hole.

But it was Nelson who came through with the win as he finished par and par at the Alexandria Golf Club, while West struggled on the final two holes, going bogey-bogey.

Nelson had a strong showing on the front nine, finishing in 1-under-par 35, while West carded a 1-over-par 37.

This year’s team title went to Evan Peters’ squad the Spidermonkeys with a 348. Peters, West, Nelson, Mitch Means, Kyle Diekman, Lyke Keeker, Todd Tvrdik and Lowell Chermak made up the team.

This year’s pinpoint putting title went to Rick Johnson, while the Viking Club winner’s title went to West, who was the tournament runner-up.

Donny Booker’s 84 earned him top honors in the NIT Division, while the 100-club championship went to Jeff Hange in a scorecard playoff and the high point championship (best of the bottom eight golfers in the NCAA Division) went to Jake Seth, also in a scorecard playoff.
