Softball: Three area players on All-Star team
Osakis' Sabrina Zimmel and Alex Anderson, and Minnewaska's Kaylyn Oberg were selected to the high school senior tournament
Osakis’ Sabrina Zimmel and Alex Anderson, and Minnewaska’s Kaylyn Oberg were selected to play in the 24th annual Minnesota High School All-Star Girls’ Softball Series June 10.
Zimmel, a pitcher, and Anderson, a second baseman, will play for the Breeze team that will be coached by Alison Mach of Blooming Prairie and Eileen Suter of Kasson-Mantorville. Both players were key cogs in last year’s undefeated regular season and state tournament appearance.
Zimmel, a six-year starting pitcher for the Silverstreaks, also played outfield and first base. She has a career record of 62-16, and a 2.68 ERA, striking out 500 over the course of her high school career. She has also pitched seven shutouts and three no-hitters.
Named to the All-state team twice, Zimmel has also been a five-time All-conference pick, including being named the Prairie Conference MVP in 2011.
At the plate, Zimmel had a .394 batting average with 41 doubles, seven triples and 12 home runs.
Anderson served as a three-year starter at second base and has a .441 batting average, including a .574 average in 2012.
She finished her career with 25 runs batted in and 46 stolen bases, excelling as a bunter/slap hitter at the plate.
Oberg, who plays second, will play for the Ice team coached by Tom Bang of Hermantown and Jason Baune of Becker. The Laker senior was part of Minnewaska’s 18-3 season that included a 13-0 run.
Oberg originally batted right-handed until her junior year when she made the switch to the other side of the plate, becoming one of the best leadoff hitters in Laker history. She is batting .467 and was also selected to the All-State second team.
The All-Star series will feature 72 of the state’s best senior softball players, along with 12 high school coaches.
The players were selected from more than 6,000 players across the state. The All-Stars are selected by the Minnesota High School Fastpitch Coaches Association.
