James "J.J." Foster, son of Sean and Shelli-Kae Foster of Alexandria, was recognized by the U.S. Chess Federation as elementary co-champion of the Minnesota State Chess Association Tournament on March 31-April 1 in St. Paul.
He shared the honor with Shrinivas Venkatasubramani of the Twin Cities.
Foster's win was notable because he declared a penalty on himself. After winning the second match, he approached the tournament director and requested a forfeit because he had moved a piece illegally.
After conferring with Foster's opponent, the game was declared a draw. Foster went on to win the rest of his games in the 4th-6th grade division.
The event took place over two days with matches averaging two hours in length. Foster is a 5th grade student at Voyageur Elementary School in Alexandria.
Foster will travel to New Orleans June 1-3 to join his teammates Cecelia and Miles Tisserand for the Susan Polger Championships.
