The following is a collection of stories and other items that were included in Alexandria newspapers over the years.
Memorial Day – The men of many wars lie silent. Their names are etched on time-discolored tombstones and unforgettably engraved on hearts of all posterity. The battles they fought made history. They died before the dove of peace proclaimed war’s end. Let the men and children of today someday know the victory in fighting the greatest enemy – war itself. Let there be no bloodshed, no maimed, no dead – only life and strength with which to build a great world, rather than to destroy the world and the brotherhood of man. So on Memorial Day when you place a wreath at the grave of someone lost and loved, pray that all who are working for a world of peace shall attain their goal, and never know the pain of the battlefield. – Author unknown

The first John C. Stone Memorial Scholarship for proficiency in English was presented to senior student and debate stand-out Mary-Clare Widstrom by Mrs. John C. Stone… A concerted effort is being made to organize a senior citizens band, made up of musicians 60 years of age or older… The Supreme Court of Minnesota has issued a statement that certain prepackaged medicines, previously sold in grocery stores, hotels and restaurants, can no longer be sold without a license. The list includes Anacin, Bufferin, Murine, Ex-lax, Vick’s Cough Syrup, Alka Seltzer and Aspirin… Mrs. Joe “Tibby” Berglund recently returned from Canada to promote friendship and to convey the principles of the Girl Scouts of America. She was thrilled to meet Lady Baden Powell, wife of the Chief of the Boy Scouts.

The walleyes were running big this week, but not fast enough. Several caught were more than eight pounds, including one at 8 pounds, 13 ounces caught by Don Tvrdik of Alexandria… Jefferson graduates Dennis and Sharon Nack have returned back to their roots, bought a 45-acre farm and have opened a sportsmen’s convenience store. Sports Den on 11th and Broadway offers gas, live bait, tackle, snacks, etc… Jefferson High School sophomore Jason Harlow built seven nesting platforms for loons on area lakes in the hope they will provide nesting areas to replace those destroyed by recent lakeshore development… Christian TV, which shut down April 3, will soon be back on the air, thanks to supporters and manager Tim Schmidt of Selective TV for the use of its tower.

Through a program called “Help the Parks Spring Back into Supper,” Pete’s County Market donated $2,463 to the county park system. The money was raised by donating 10 cents of every Favorite Brand product sold during the drive… Shelly Grothen of rural Parkers Prairie attended Fergus Falls Community College and earned a social work degree at Moorhead State University despite gloomy predictions that her cerebral palsy would keep her from doing well in school… Cardinal adapted bowlers Neil Klimek and Lindsay Gruber set a new school record when they won the POHI championship. Dane Marthaler partnered with Jessica Keller to earn the doubles MH championship. The Cardinals team finished second overall… Alex Tech’s request for the $9.1 million science wing survived Governor Ventura’s budget-slashing axe.
