Softball: Brandon-Evansville moves on to Section 6A playoffs

The Brandon-Evansville softball team upended top-seeded Pillager 6-5 last Thursday to stay alive in the Section 6A playoffs.

The Chargers used that win to advance to the subsection semifinals where they lost 13-8 against rival Parkers Prairie. Brandon-Evansville led 3-0 after a half inning against the Panthers, but a six-run third helped Parkers Prairie build a lead it never relinquished.

“I’m very proud of the girls today,” head coach Tim Pattrin said. “They battled all day and stayed in both games until the end. Both Carlie [Steffenson] and Kinsley [Randt] pitched very well and threw a lot of strikes. Congrats to Parkers Prairie. They are a good ball club.”

Kathryn Burquest had a three-RBI game for the Panthers. Tamara Schmidt had three hits and three runs, while Micaela Noga, Heather Moske, Amber Guenther and Courtney Blake all had two hits apiece.

Steffenson and Tasmine Okerlund each had three hits apiece for Brandon-Evansville. Randt added two hits, including a home run to go along with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Randt took the loss from the rubber after allowing 12 hits and three walks. She struck out four.

The loss meant the Chargers would play New York Mills last night, Tuesday, for the right to play the loser of Sebeka and Parkers Prairie for a chance to play in the section title game. The 6A championship is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, at 4 p.m. in Menahga.

Brandon-Evansville extended its season into the double-elimination format by taking down the South’s top seed. The Chargers used six runs over their final three innings to secure the 6-5 win over Pillager.

Brandon-Evansville trailed 3-1 going into the sixth. The Chargers answered with three runs in that inning and two more in the top of the seventh to take a 6-4 lead. Those two in the seventh proved important as Pillager added a run before Steffenson got the final out to preserve the win.

Steffenson went all seven innings for Brandon-Evansville. She allowed 11 hits and three walks, but limited the Huskies to just the five runs.

Alea Alstead led the comeback for the Chargers with two hits and three RBIs. Megan Kokett, Sara Roers, Emily Friedrich and Claire Bedore all had two hits apiece, as well.

The Ashby softball team had its season come to an end last Thursday in a 10-0 loss to Parkers Prairie in the 6A South tournament.

The Panthers ended things early by scoring eight times in the bottom of the first inning. Parkers Prairie had seven hits in the inning to set the tone for the rest of the game. The Panthers scored two more in the second and went on to end things after five.

Amber Sundal, Bailey Funkhouser and Jeanette Evavold collected the only three hits for the Arrows. Ashby ended the season 9-11 overall and 4-6 in the Pheasant Conference.

“The Arrow softball team will miss the dedication, leadership, team support and determination of our seniors Jaden Witt and Kellie Anderson next year,” head coach Kandace Norby said. “We wish them the best of luck.

“I’m proud of all of the girls on making it to the second round in the subsections. They represented their team and community very well, and I am very proud of their hard work and dedication throughout this season.
