Card girls' golf: Alexandria fourth at Melrose Invitational
The Alexandria girls’ golf team finished fourth in soggy conditions at the Greystone Golf Course last Thursday.
The Cardinals finished with a team score of 372 as Natalie Amundson shot an 85 to lead the way. St. Cloud Tech won the event with a 358. Rocori was second at 368 and St. Cloud Cathedral shot a 370 to round out the top three.
“As a team, we were disappointed in our fourth-place finish because we have beaten all of the schools that placed ahead of us,” head coach Tim Zupfer said. “It certainly is never fun playing in the conditions the girls faced today. It is good preparation, however, as it is quite possible we may face similar scoring conditions in the championship meets ahead.”
Amundson’s finish was good for third place individually. Amanda Bigger was right behind her in fourth with an 88. Emily Thul shot a 96 and Caroline Roers carded a 103 to round out the scoring for Alexandria. Brynn Novotny withdrew from the tournament because of a back injury.
“Brynn did not want to walk in after playing only six or seven holes,” Zupfer said. “But it did not make sense to have her continue. She was unable to make a good swing at the golf ball, and it was not worth the risk of further injury.”
It was more important that Novotny was able to play in the Section meet coming up in Long Prairie. The Cardinals are hoping to punch a ticket to state when they play in the two-day event starting tomorrow, Thursday. The section tournament will wrap up on Friday with the state tournament set for June 12-13.
