Cardinal baseball, softball teams fall in playoffs: CORRECTION

Elk River’s Anna Pipenhagen struck out 11 batters as the Elks rolled to a 12-2 win over Alexandria Friday in Section 8AAA softball playoff action at the Woodland Elementary softball fields.

Taylor Ellingson went the distance on the mound for the Cardinals, taking the loss, while she and Jess Syvrud each had a hit and an RBI.

The Cardinal baseball team opened 8AAA playoff action with a 4-3 win over St. Cloud Apollo in their opener Monday. Beau Backhaus picked up the win as he pitched four and two-thirds innings, with Blake Stockert the save.

Alexandria fell in the quarterfinals 3-2 as St. Michael-Albertville mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs to take the lead. A.J. Anderson took the loss. CORRECTION: Nick Knoblach took the loss as he pitched the final inning for the Cardinals. Anderson pitched six innings, allowing just two hits and one earned run.
