Baseball: Brandon-Evansville wins 11 straight

Monday will decide the conference title

The Brandon-Evansville baseball team set itself up to play for a share of the conference title with an 11-4 win over Hillcrest Lutheran Academy on Monday night.

The idea of playing for a share of the Pheasant Conference crown was highly implausible about a month ago. The Chargers were 1-7 and had given up 73 runs through their first six losses.

They have played like a different team since that stretch. Brandon-Evansville’s win over Hillcrest on Monday was its 10th straight and with a win over Ashby in a game scheduled for last night, Thursday, the Chargers would share the league title with Wheaton-Herman-Norcross with a 9-3 record.

Brandon-Evansville has used a lot of late rallies during its current winning streak and it was no different against the Comets. Hillcrest jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Chargers scored 10 runs over the final four innings to run away with the win.

Levi Hintermeister led the attack at the plate. The senior went 3-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and three stolen bases. Nolan Bartholomew had two hits and Jared Goehringer, Dan Schaffer and Tom Bosek each added two RBIs.

“We had a nice balanced night offensively with eight different players making contributions to this victory and several different players coming up with important hits with runners in scoring position,” head coach Brian Perleberg said. “Although we fell behind early, I felt our pitchers and defense never seemed rattled and just weathered the storm of that second inning when Hillcrest scored all of their runs.”

Bosek threw 4 2/3 innings of relief for starter JT Huisman. Bosek struck out five and walked just one on his way to holding Hillcrest scoreless down the stretch.

“Tom Bosek pitched extremely well for us tonight,” Perleberg said. “He has been very consistent for us coming out of the bullpen all year.”

The Brandon-Evansville baseball team upped its winning streak to 11 games with a 14-10 win over West Central Area in eight innings on Tuesday night.

Tom Bosek led a 16-hit attack by the Chargers with a 5-for-5 day at the plate. He finished with a triple, three runs scored and three RBIs. Craig Campbell went 4-for-6. Levi Hintermeister was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Blake Satterlie added a double and a triple.

“We were fortunate to come away with a win today as WCA gave us a tough battle,” head coach Brian Perleberg said. “Our pitchers had some control problems and the defense struggled to find consistency, but the offense really performed well.”

Bosek delivered what turned out to be the game-winning RBI triple in the eighth inning. Billie Juul got the win on the mound as he finished off the Knights in the bottom of the frame and got the Chargers to extras with two strikeouts in the seventh inning.
