Card tennis: Team season is over for Alexandria
The Cards fell to Moorhead 4-3
The team portion of the Cardinal boys’ tennis team’s season ended abruptly Tuesday as they fell to Moorhead 4-3 in the Sub-section 8AA tournament.
The Alexandria boys swept the doubles division, but were swept in singles.
“Moorhead had four good singles players and we just couldn’t find a way to win a singles match anywhere,” said head coach Dave Ronnin. “Both Brook Wood and Ryan Johnson had close matches, and had some chances, but failed to win big points when they were needed.
“Austin [Storm] and Mack [Wadi] at first doubles, Brendan [Holm] and Will [Harding] at second doubles and Mark [Kallevig] and Levi [Duwenhoegger] at third doubles all did just what was expected of them when we saw that Moorhead had put all their strength into the singles lineup,” he added. “All three doubles teams won in straight sets, but once again, three points will never win a tennis match.
“I felt our guys gave it all they had today and that was the case for most of the season, and I feel bad that they lost another very close match.
“Trevor Grandgenett and Ben VonBargen had to play the two toughest spots for most of the season at first and second singles,” he said. “Their records didn’t show the success the team had, but they opened the door for the rest of the guys to get points for the team.
“Once again, our team was second to none in the sportsmanship department, as night in and night out, our guys showed class and respect representing our school and community in top form. They can be very proud of their accomplishments both on and off the courts.”
The Cardinals opened individual section play yesterday at Brainerd.
