Summer time is fun time for kids!

Summer is fast approaching. Kids will soon be out of school and looking for something to do.

According to John Hopkins University Center for Summer Learning, students experience significant learning loss during the summer months. Studies also show that the loss varies significantly by grade level and subject matter.

Alexandria Community Education’s Your Enrichment Summer Times catalog is packed with opportunities for fun, friendship and learning new things. Camps, “mini-versities” and theater opportunities are sure to pique the interest of even the most discerning youth.

There is something for all students from kindergarten through grade 12. The purpose of offering these activities is to help families keep children involved in meaningful activities throughout the summer in order to promote fun and continued learning.

SUMMER CLUB

Summer 5th to 7th Grade Club is back. This summer marks the second year of Summer Club, a flexible summer option for middle level youth that provides a safe, fun and enriching summer experience.

Last year, 55 to 70 students per week enjoyed all types of summer enrichment activities, from learning to golf to character quality lessons.

Due to challenging economic times, many families choose not to send their middle level children to any type of care as a necessary cost savings. Children this age may spend up to 40 or more hours a week in an unsupervised setting. Summer Club helps bridge that gap for three days a week for six weeks during the middle of summer.

Students have the opportunity to participate in special events and field trips, academics, recreation and fitness, service/volunteer activities, leadership and career building activities, technology, and cooking and crafts.

United Way supports Summer Club by helping pay transportation expenses in order to keep costs as low as possible for families.
