Girls' golf: Minnewaska wins WCCN title
This was the seventh conference crown for the Laker girls
The Minnewaska girls’ golf team swept through the West Central North Conference schedule to easily claim the league title with a win Thursday at New London-Spicer.
Senior Brianna Janu was the conference champion, edging out her sister, Jenna, by two shots through the season. She did it with her medalist finish of even par 36 Thursday, while Jenna was second with a 40.
The Lakers won the final league meet by 22 strokes over second place Albany, putting five players in the top 10.
Minnewaska put four players in the top five of the final WCCN individual standings. Along with the Janu sisters, Ellen Stensrud finished third and Alexis Guggisberg was fourth.
“Ashlyn Guggisberg was seventh overall, which is great for a 7th grader,” said head coach Tony Janu. “Ariel [Ostrander] finished in the middle of the pack. [She] shot 49 in last night’s meet.”
Minnewaska, ranked No. 2 in the State Class AA polls by the Minnesota Golf Coaches Association and No. 7 overall in the combined polls by the Minnesota Golf Association, won its seventh straight West Central Conference title and third in the North Division. The Lakers won the first two North titles in 2006 and 2007, then switched to the South Division, where they claimed four straight crowns.
