Section 6AA-West softball: Minnewaska wins opener
The Lakers defeated Sauk Centre 7-2
The Lakers took advantage of strong pitching and hot bats to pull away from No. 7 seeded Sauk Centre Friday to win their opening round game in the Section 6AA-West softball playoffs.
Kaylee Jacobs opened the scoring for Minnewaska with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning, then scored once in the second and again in the third. From there, the Lakers were in control as they scored four more in the bottom of the fifth as Courtney Schmidt drove in a run on a single, Jillian Hendrickson drove in two on a double and Brook Winter hit an RBI double to give Minnewaska a 7-0 lead.
Pitcher Mady Phillips had a little hitch in the sixth inning as she allowed the Mainstreeters two runs, but closed out the game to pick up the win. She scattered six hits and did not walk a batter, striking out one.
Minnewaska took on Ottertail Central yesterday, Tuesday, in Alexandria. The winner of that game moves on to play the Pequot Lakes/Staples-Motley winner tomorrow, Thursday in Waite Park at 4:30 p.m.
