The Brandon-Evansville baseball team keeps finding ways to win close games as the Chargers improved their winning streak to nine games with a 7-4, eight-inning win over Hancock last Thursday.

The Chargers trailed 4-2 before tying the game with two runs in the sixth inning. That’s how the two teams went to the top of the eighth when Brandon-Evansville pushed across three runs before securing the win in the bottom of the frame.

Craig Campbell started the go-ahead rally with a walk to start the eighth. Dan Schaffer followed with a single before Levi Hintermeister delivered an RBI single. Both Schaffer and Hintermeister then came around to score on a Hancock error to give their team some breathing room.

Schaffer threw a clean bottom of the eighth to get the win. He worked all eight innings, allowing just two hits, while striking out six.

Schaffer’s performance on the mound helped his team overcome 15 runners left on base. Brandon-Evansville outhit the Owls 17-2 but struggled to find the big hit before Schaffer came through with a two-RBI double in the sixth to tie the game.

“It was one of those games where I felt like we controlled the game and were always putting the pressure on them,” head coach Brian Perleberg said. “Then you look up at the scoreboard and see that we were still behind. We had a tough third inning when we allowed two hits and three walks, but after that inning, our defense made the plays they needed to, and Dan Schaffer turned in a [gutsy] performance from the mound to give us a chance to regain the lead.”

Hintermeister, Campbell and Tom Bosek all had three hits to lead their team on offense.

Doug Zimmel made it easy on his offense last Friday night as the Osakis baseball team won its second game of the week with a 5-0 victory over Eagle Valley.

Zimmel kept the Rebels’ lineup at bay throughout the night. He allowed just three hits and no walks, while striking out three.

His offense gave him some run support with a few timely hits through the middle innings. Osakis scored twice in the third on the back of Drew Fearing and Joe Roggenbuck RBI singles. Grayson Fortenberry added an RBI base hit the following inning. In the fifth, it was Roggenbuck who added his second hit of the night on an RBI triple before Kyle Swenstad brought him home on a squeeze play.

“We executed some great bunts and came through when we needed to,” head coach Shad Schmidt said. “It was good to see us be able to do those things as we may need to do that come playoff time.”

The Silverstreaks were given the eighth seed in the 5A West tournament bracket. That forced Osakis to play a play-in game against ninth-seeded Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City for the right to play top-seeded Browerville in the quarterfinals.

The Silverstreaks and Falcons are scheduled to play in Osakis at 5 p.m. tomorrow, Thursday. A win and they would match up with the Tigers in Browerville on Friday at 5 p.m.

Osakis played the Tigers close in two regular-season games this spring. The Silverstreaks lost 3-0 on April 24 and 4-2 on May 11. They were scheduled to wrap up the regular season at Hancock last night, Tuesday, and hoped to carry over some momentum into the tournament.

“[We’re] playing well right now and need to continue that into the playoffs,” Schmidt said. “We just need to fine tune some things, remain focused and get better and ready for the playoffs.”
