Softball: Parkers Prairie blanks Brandon-Evansville

The Panthers scored 10 runs in the first inning

The Brandon-Evansville softball team didn’t give itself much of a chance against Parkers Prairie last Friday night.

The Chargers fell behind 10-0 after the first inning and went on to commit 12 errors in a 13-0 loss to the Panthers. Carlie Steffenson started and gave up all 13 runs, only six of which were earned. She went out for the start of the third inning but was lifted after a three-run homer added to an already big lead for the Panthers. Kinsley Randt got the final six outs for Brandon-Evansville by facing just eight batters.

“One tough inning was our problem today,” head coach Tim Pattrin said. “Glad it’s over and out of the way before playoffs start on Tuesday.”

The Chargers could never build any momentum against Parkers Prairie starter Sam Geiser. The freshman allowed just five hits and one walk in the complete-game victory. She struck out one and relied on a defense that didn’t commit any errors behind her.

The combination of Kaylee and Madison Dorn proved to be the biggest difference makers for the Panthers. Both had a home run and finished with four RBIs. Kaylee had three hits and three runs scored on the night. Tamara Schmidt added a home run and finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Sara Roers led the Chargers at the plate with two hits. Megan Kokett, Emily Friedrich and Tasmine Okerlund added one apiece as well.

The Chargers finished the regular season with an 8-6 record that earned them the number four seed in the South subsection. They were scheduled to take on Eagle Valley at home last night, Tuesday. A win and Brandon-Evansville would play at 2 p.m. in Brandon on Thursday.

“It’s been a good year so far,” Pattrin said. “Hopefully it will continue into the playoffs.”

Parkers Prairie earned the third seed in the South and was scheduled to play sixth-seeded Bertha-Hewitt in the opening round last night. Ashby came in as the seventh seed and West Central Area earned the ninth seed.

The Chargers couldn’t hold off a late rally from Bertha-Hewitt as the Bears overcame a 3-1 deficit to win 4-3 last Thursday.

Bertha-Hewitt (6-12) walked off with a win by pushing across a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. That capped off a rally that saw them score twice in the sixth to tie the game at three apiece.
